The second free practice in the run-up to the Miami Grand Prix was concluded with the fastest time by Mercedes driver George Russell. At the Miami International Autodrome, the Briton was the fastest man in a time of 1:29.938.
Charles Leclerc could not match the time of the Mercedes driver while Sergio Perez scored the third fastest time. Max Verstappen did not set time due to technical problems with his RB18.
The signal went green for FP2 and the first cars came into action. The first times appeared on the board with Esteban Ocon the fastest in 1:32.906 ahead of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo. Valtteri Bottas was the one who would not drive for the time being, the Alfa Romeo team was still working on the car of the Finn. Bottas crashed in FP1 and suffered significant damage from contact with the wall.
By now Fernando Alonso’s teammate, Ocon, had passed to P1. The Spaniard had to give that position to his compatriot Carlos Sainz, who now had the fastest time in 1:31.463. After 10 minutes, Charles Leclerc took over from Sainz in a time of 1:31.131. Pierre Gasly came up just short, but placed in P2 between the Ferraris. Guanzy Zhou joined behind the threesome ahead of Ocon when Sergio Perez experienced a slight spin. The Mexican was able to continue without consequences. His teammate Max Verstappen hadn’t been on track yet. The Dutchman is said to have received a new gearbox in his RB18 following a light contact with the wall earlier in FP1.With 42 minutes left on the clock, a code red was given by a big crash by Carlos Sainz, the Spaniard lost his car on the exit of Turn 13 and shot hard into the wall with extensive damage. The Ferrari driver himself was unharmed.
The track was released with 30 minutes remaining in the session. At Red Bull, Verstappen was finally sent out, but he indicated that things were not going well yet. In the meantime, the Dutchman made his first meter despite a problem with steering. For Verstappen, the end seemed to be exercise. At that moment
Leclerc improved the fastest time to 1:30.044 while Lewis Hamilton closed behind the Monegask at the expense of Perez.
George Russell made his mark with 23 minutes left in the session as he improved Leclerc’s time. The Mercedes driver set the fastest time of the moment in 1:29.938. Sergio Perez was still in third time for the time being, which very lightly grazed the wall but was able to continue on his way. Lewis Hamilton was behind the Mexican followed by Fernando Alonso.
Nicholas Latifi raised a red flag with 12 minutes to go. The Williams driver was parked at Turn 8 after losing drive, according to the Canadian. Many drivers now drove on the medium tire to collect important data.
In the final phase, no times were improved at the front of the field and George Russell closed the second free practice with the fastest time. The Bit did this in 1:29.938 for Charles Leclerc. Sergio Perez was able to go to the hotel with the third time behind his name. Max Verstappen did not play anymore, and did not have time to his name, as did Valtteri Bottas.
